Riassunto analitico
The Italian manufacturing industry is the second one in Europe for value added, after Germany, and the seventh in the world (Confindustria, 2019). However, the traditional indicators of innovations such as the gross domestic expenditure on R&D and the number of patents show that Italian firms are lagging behind most of their European counterparts. Concerns have been expressed on the small size of the Italian manufacturing firms, that may hinder their innovative capability and prevent them from effectively exploiting opportunities in international markets (Banca d’Italia, 2013). The comparison is typically made with Germany and France, the other two prominent manufacturing industries in Europe, that are characterised by a larger average firm size.
This work aims to investigate the innovative gap between the Italian and the French and German manufacturing industries in light of the relationship between innovation and firm size.
