Riassunto analitico
In this work, we estimate a Gravity Model of Migration for Italy over the period 2005-2017. Since our focus is on internal migration, we deal with interprovincial migration flows. The Gravity Model has been extensively used in the empirical literature on migration to represent bilateral flows as a function of the population at origin and destination, distance, as well as several "push" and "pull" factors. With this regard, GDP per capita and unemployment rate have often been regarded as important migration factors. In this same vein, our goal is to estimate the effect of these variables on internal flows in Italy. We are also interested in assessing whether economic and employment prospects at origin and destination have a different effect on women's decision to migrate, the rationale being that women often face greater obstacles in terms of their self-determination decision.
