Riassunto analitico
The concept of circular economy has been considered in different fields for its capacity to promote sustainable and efficient policies in terms of resource management, which support the achievement of environmental and socio-economic welfare. Among these fields may be found the management of plastic waste, of which 79% ends in landfills or in the environment, and barely 9% are recycled. Plastics produced still exist somewhere in the world, becoming a permanent pollutant in our environment, increasing waste production, impacting living organisms’ health, and threatening oceans.
Recycling is important, but will never be the solution to rapidly expanding plastic consumption. Due to these reasons, plastic concerns have become in the last few years a social and political priority, supported by several initiatives. However, to reverse plastic pollution a variety of individual interventions are needed, ranging from changes in consumer behavior to private sector actors’ role, in minimizing plastic demand (Varotto and Spagnolli, 2017) or launch market products made of recycled plastic.
Thus, the first need is investigating on different stakeholders involved in the use of plastic materials such as consumers and industries managers to identifying their experiences, social point of view, expectations and strategic behaviors finalized to sustainable consumption, initiatives of circular economy and social safety. consumers play a vital role on the last step of plastic use and processing, and their everyday consumption choices make a substantial contribution to limiting the environmental effects of plastic. Perceiving existing preferences and consumer habits are critical aspects of having a strong impact on plastic demand. Thus, individuals may help mitigate the negative effects of plastics by reducing their buying and usage of plastic products. Moreover, the focus on collective action to reduce plastic pollution raises an additional gap in research and practice related to the urgency in investigating companies’ roles. Private sector companies are conscious of the plastic problem and most of them responded with the implementation of initiatives and practices to reduce excessive plastic or launch new products made of recycled plastic. Furthermore, understanding the factors that drive companies in the adoption of circular plastic economy practices can be useful in promoting sustainable production and consumption. Thus, this thesis aims to give a general overview of the plastic problem and how it is perceived and managed by different stakeholders. In detail, chapters 1 and 2 studied the complexity of the consumer making-decision process in purchasing products or packaging made of recycled plastic and introducing plastic concern as a new dimension of consumption able to affect her choices. Chapter 3, instead, analyzes companies’ sustainable management practices related to plastic, identifying pressures enabling their implementation.
