Riassunto analitico
Since the publication of Chesbrough’s book in 2003, the open innovation topic has been widely discussed in the literature. In addition, its positive effects on the innovation activities of firms are now ascertained. Nonetheless, according to Subtil Lacerda & van den Bergh (2020) and De Mergelina & Lemus-Aguilar (2021), the effect of external knowledge on the innovation activities of companies operating in the renewable energy sector still needs to be studied in depth. Thus, the aim of this work is to contribute to the topic of open innovation in the sector. To do so, the research is structured as follows.
First, the relationship between the broader concept of innovation and the renewable energy sector is explored.
Second, the research focuses on the open innovation paradigm. An introduction to the concept of open innovation is provided, along with the main advantages and challenges highlighted in the literature for its strategic implementation.
Third, a real application of the open innovation paradigm is provided by studying the Enel’s case. In particular, Open Innovability® is the platform created by Enel to merge innovation with sustainable solutions. Its name is the crasis of innovation and sustainability. The contribution to the literature is provided by means of a descriptive, single case study about Enel and its open innovability strategy. In particular, the mix between environmental sustainability and open innovation is analyzed through the lenses of Enel Innovation Hubs & Labs. Thanks to the support of Antonio Biondi, Enel’s Italian Hub Manager, the case study is drafted on the day-to-day activities that allow the multinational corporation to innovate in the renewable energy sector.
Two research questions are proposed in this work. They are:
- RQ1. Which are the key success factors to be drawn from the Italian Enel Innovation Hub & Labs? Which are the key challenges to be tackled?
- RQ2. Does Open Innovation contribute to the achievement of Enel’s business line objectives? If so, to what extent?
Overall, the findings show that open innovation is a useful tool to address the problems in the energy sector through the development of innovative renewable energy solutions.
The case of Enel could be of inspiration to other players in the energy market to move towards more environmentally sustainable energy production strategy.
