Abstract
This paper studies the impact of extreme weather shocks on three of Europe's main economies. To identify changes in extreme weather patterns, we use the novel European Extreme Events Climate Index, which includes five components summarizing information about the main climatic hazards: cold and heat stresses, droughts, heavy precipitations and intense winds. A series of Bayesian VAR models is estimated to assess the impact of each type of weather event on various sectors of production, ranging from manufacturing to construction to services. We find clear evidence of the impact of extreme weather, with each component impacting heterogeneously across different countries and production sectors. The analysis is robust to different estimation and identification schemes.
