Riassunto analitico
The dynamics of party competition have been studied theoretically and empirically to understand how parties interact and position themselves within the public debate and how they react to the emergence and electoral rise of new parties. However, while most account for the outcomes of party competition, e.g., the observable party positions resulting from competition, little is known about the temporal dynamics and complex processes leading to these positions. This research gap needs to be addressed in order to fully understand the micro-foundations of the temporal and interactive processes of party behavior. My dissertation accounts for these temporal processes by combining the literature on party competition with the body of works on discourse networks. This approach analyzes public statements of political actors as dynamic networks and, therefore, accounts for the interdependent processes that are fundamental for the mechanics of party competition. Applying this method, a case study will analyze the discursive contagion effect of Eurosceptic parties on their mainstream competitors in Italy. Formerly known as a deeply affirmative pro-European supporter country, Italy has been widely shocked by the contemporary European crises, elevating electoral support for the main Eurosceptic parties and triggering a significant re-alignment of the Italian party system.
