Silicon photonics is emerging as a promising platform for next-generation sensing, offering compact, low-power, and interference-free operation compared with traditional electronic sensors. Despite the maturity of electronics, their inherent limits in bandwidth, electromagnetic immunity, and scalability constrain further progress in many applications. This thesis investigates silicon-integrated photonic sensing through a literature-based and quantitative analysis, aiming to identify where photonic approaches can outperform or complement electronic ones.
The overall objective is to assess the technological and commercial potential of silicon photonic sensors, outlining the conditions under which they may transition from research prototypes to practical industrial solutions in the near future.
