Riassunto analitico
Purpose: Children with severe neurologic impairment are frequently exposed to pain secondary to their condition and to the related procedures. While pain causes are multiple and often challenging to diagnose, mostly due to the patients’ nonverbal condition, little is known whether some of them may be more or less likely according to age.
Methods: We conducted a multicenter retrospective study. We enrolled patients from 1 to 18 years with severe neurologic impairment, collecting demographic and clinical data, regarding painful events secondary to their condition or to medical and surgical procedures.
Results: In children with severe neurologic impairment some causes of pain are more frequent in defined age periods. Gastro-intestinal related pain is more common in the first years of life, osteo-muscular related pain more frequent after five years of age.
Conclusions: Specific age-related pain frequencies in children with severe neurologic impairment may help physicians in the diagnostic approach.
