Riassunto analitico
This thesis focuses on the Somali context to explore the phenomenon of mobility from the perspective of Somali communities. The research intends to shed light on the local conceptualization of displacement in Somalia, focusing on the perceptions of IDPs on the nature and meaning of their status as displaced, as well as the solutions that ought to be proposed to it. To do so, this work was informed by semistructured interviews with displaced communities in Bosaso, local authorities, and various stakeholders of the United Nations Saameynta project, collected during a field mission I carried out in Somalia in 2024. Considering the focus on relocation schemes, land, and housing provision in international humanitarian and development agendas on displacement, the research is addressed from a critical spatial and geographical perspective. In the results analysis, this allows for a nuanced exploration of how space and spatial practices shape the experiences and perceptions of IDPs regarding their displacement status, and for examining the power relations in the production and reordering of space in contexts of displacement such as Bosaso and, more generally, Somalia. Overall, this research is a small but heartfelt attempt to give back visibility to Somali displaced communities’ agency in giving their own meaning to mobility and providing their own solutions to displacement, by leaving space for their voices to be heard and their experiences to be known.
