Abstract
Human capital is widely acknowledged as being one of the fundamental drivers of the British Industrial Revolution. However, recent scholarship has been mostly concerned with the upper tail of the knowledge distribution, arguing that the top 3-5 percent of skilled workers were the main drivers of innovation and economic growth. We reassess this literature within the context of mechanical engineering, arguably one of the key industries of the period.
