Abstract
In this work, we investigated cortical and subcortical brain activity associated with the occurrence of sleep slow waves in children and adolescents. To this aim, we used a multimodal approach combining EEG and fMRI. We found, during slow waves, a negative hemodynamic modulation in the bilateral somatomotor cortex, as previously observed in adult individuals. In addition, we found that thalamic activation was positively correlated with the age of participants, indicating that the contribution of the thalamus to slow wave regulation and expression may change significantly during maturation and until adulthood.
