Riassunto analitico
In this essay an oligopolistic model is proposed to investigate the conditions under which firms with market power can be incentivized to merge and when vertical integration can be seen as a valid market solution in a certain sector, in particular with reference to the current Italian economic situation.
The most interesting result of the model is the following: under certain conditions in a market composed by firms with market power both upstream and downstream, a monopoly resulting from a vertical integration will be an efficient market solution, since the deadweight losses will be partially eliminated and the vertically integrated company can incorporate a pricing strategy conducive to profit and welfare maximization.
