Ecosystem services (ES) represent the goods and services provided by nature that are essential for human survival and well-being. As such, they exemplify the deep dependence of human activities on the integrity and functionality of natural assets, commonly referred to as natural capital. Most ESs fall within the categories of open-access resources or pure public goods: since no one “owns” or holds exclusive rights over them, and others cannot be excluded from their use or enjoyment, there is little incentive for beneficiaries to manage them sustainably. Nevertheless, to ensure a sustainable future, it is imperative to integrate considerations of ecosystem services and natural capital into individual behaviors, public policy agendas, and corporate strategies, in order to promote a more regenerative economic paradigm. This dissertation aims to explore how ecosystem services and natural capital can be effectively incorporated into decision-making processes at multiple levels.
The first two studies focus on the psychological and motivational drivers that influence the individual valuation of ES, drawing on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the Value-Belief-Norm (VBN) framework. The first paper investigates how the perceived importance of ES varies depending on whether benefits are framed as individual or collective, using a contingent valuation method replicated in two Italian regions to enhance the robustness of results. The second paper builds on this by examining how psycho-attitudinal variables influence the divergence between willingness to pay (WTP) and willingness to accept (WTA) in the valuation of marine ecosystem services degraded by litter. A multinomial regression analysis explores how values, emotional factors, and attribution of responsibility affect respondents’ preferences, providing new insights into how different cognitive framings shape the perception of ecosystem service losses and gains.
The third and final chapter shifts the focus from individual preferences to collective governance. It adopts an engaged scholarship approach to co-develop an integrated risk assessment for the implementation of a Water Safety Plan. The case study demonstrates that ensuring the sustainable provision of drinking water, a critical ecosystem service, requires a holistic, systemic approach that accounts for vulnerability factors emerging from the socio-ecological system, including anthropogenic, infrastructural, and environmental risks, while also fostering extensive, ongoing collaboration among diverse stakeholders.
Taken together, these three studies provide both conceptual and operational insights into how ecosystem services can be embedded in practice. The first two chapters offer guidance for designing public policies that are aligned with citizens’ needs, preferences, and motivations for pro-environmental behavior. The third chapter, by contrast, illustrates a practical model for collaborative environmental governance, contributing a blueprint for aligning academic research with real-world sustainability challenges.
