Sustainable generation to lead the energy transition

Abstract

Climate change is already happening: temperatures are rising, drought and wild fires are starting to occur more frequently, rainfall patterns are shifting, glaciers and snow are melting, and the global mean sea level is rising. To fight climate change, we must reduce or prevent the emissions linked to human activities also mitigating the biodiversity loss, the improperly land use and per capita consumption growth. In this extremely challenging landscape, Enel, focus its strategy on sustainability as a value leveraging on energy transition. In particular, taking into account the power generation (renewables and thermal), Enel scenario is based on the growth of renewables (about 70% of total capacity at 2040) and the complete coal phase out until 2030, addressing dynamically the evolution of major trends, decarbonization and electrification, allowing the drastic reduction of CO2 emissions (about 70% g CO2/KWh at 2030).
The solutions analyzed involved in the mitigation of the impacts related to generation and aim at the conservation of biodiversity, carbon sequestration, creation of shared value with local. Forest management initiatives, were investigated to offset the emissions of conventional generation, along the ongoing energy transition. As far as renewable energy, instead, attention is focused on innovative technologies aimed at mitigating the impacts of large photovoltaic plants. Agrovoltaic systems were shown as one of the best solution for the future photovoltaic growth. Nevertheless, Enel Global Power Generation is considering different initiatives to integrate the photovoltaic generation with ecosystem services care, making sustainable the energy transition.
